RARE 1964 ROLEX OYSTER AIR-KING PRECISION

Inside case back marked: `1002 1v.64` (assembled 4th quarter of 1964)
Movement: 26 Jewel cal.1520 automatic.
A very rare vintage Rolex wristwatch in exceptional condition, with a stainless steel `Oyster` case and the original expanding riveted bracelet.
Why is it rare?
1. After finding just how many WW2 pilots were buying Rolex watches to replace less reliable timepieces, the Air-King was produced by Rolex primarily as a pilot watch. They proved so robust and reliable that in the early 60’s this 5500 model was also produced as the `Explorer` wristwatch, a name made famous after being worn on the first successful attempt to climb Everest.
2.. The Rolex dial has Arab numerals.
3. It still has the original riveted expanding `Oyster` bracelet.

In 1952, with the advent of regular commercial transatlantic flights, Pan American Airlines approached Rolex to produce a wristwatch capable of simultaneously showing the exact time in two different time zones.The result was the GMT-MASTER. The gold hand with the large triangular pointer moves around the dial once every 24 hours and when used in conjunction with the 24 hour rotating bezel, the time can be set for any world-time-zone.

Only produced for a short time in the early 1980’s. A rare Rolex `Transitional` Submariner. So called because while retaining the now sought after early type matte dial it was fitted with a mineral crystal rather than the traditional plexi-glass. Inside back cover; `813 5513 1.70` (Assembled by Rolex in the first quarter of 1970)
Supplied with both 20mm black leather and 20mm grey webbing NATO G10 military straps.

A very rare Royal Navy Military Issue wristwatch with Rolex Sevice document dated 04/04/08 and a letter of authentication from Rolex UK dated 08/06/09 stating that the watch was supplied to the Royal Navy in 1972. The existence of these documents prove that the watch is neither fake nor stolen. (See photographs)
Stainless steel case, black dial with luminous dot and baton hour markers, signed; `Rolex Oyster Perpetual, 660ft=200m Submariner` and printed with a T within a circle.
The inside of the case back is stamped; `813 5513 1.70` The first three digits should correspond to the last three digits of the case number. The middle four digits denote the model number. The final three digits denote the year of assembly/manufacture, in this case the first quarter of 1970. It must be noted that the first three digits, 813, do NOT correspond to the last three digits of the case number, 804. This is not uncommon. These watches were serviced in batches, sometimes by Rolex and sometimes by the MOD, and the case backs would often get mixed up. A sister watch to this, with corresponding numbers (826), was sold by Bonhams at auction in London on 10/06/09 for £34,000 plus buyer's premium, plus tax, icreasing the total price paid to the region of £40,000.
