Roman Military Waist Belt Buckle Ref: 1-SN5700

A very rare Roman Military waist belt buckle and plate. This item which dates to the period 4th - 5th Century AD shows a stylised dolphin on either side of the buckle bar. Much decoration is still present as is part of the belt pin. Excavated in the North of England in the late 1960's it is of wonderful style and form.
Size 8.0 X 7.5 CM.

The same type has been found at Hadrian's wall and is known to have been a popular design favoured by the Germanic Contingent of the Roman Army .A small chip to the corner missing as seen ..(perhaps how it may have been lost ) and much original silvering remaining ..Size 6.0 x 2.4 CM

This item which dates to the period circa 1st- 2nd Century AD, , would have been one of six or eight which would have been mounted either side of a large waist belt. It would have decorated the belt together with giving it shape and presance.This piece is three or four times the size of the average and as such very rare. Size 11.0 CM in length
